The seven days Machame route is inequality the ideal program for this route, the hike from Barranco to Barafu is divided into two days providing for a short day just before the summit attempt. This is very necessary since summit day starts very early around midnight, so climbers are sleeping within a very short time as they are going into the challenging day on the mountain.
DAY 1: MACHAME GATE (1,800M) TO MACHAME CAMP (3,000M), DISTANCE: 11 KM ELEVATION (FT): 5,400FT TO 9,400FT AND HIKING TIME: 5-7 HOURS
On the first day, depart at 9 am from the location of your hotel either Arusha or Moshi and proceed to Machame Gate, and you will arrive around 11 am. Please note, that the arrival time at the gate may differ depending on your hotel pickup location. Consume about an hour at the gate while Reality Wild Adventure Chief Guide registers and arrange your climb and all porters.
Begin your hiking and your first day’s stop is Machame Camp. Each day, porters and cooks will walk ahead to set up the camp in time for your arrival. On the first day of the hike, is a nice comfortable walk within the tropical rainforest of Kilimanjaro. The forest will decrease at the end of the walk and nature will change to cover heaters, tall grasses and different types of wildflowers. As you cross into the tropical rainforest, you are possible to spot colobus monkeys and wild birds’. If the weather is clear, view the surrounding area and your ultimate destination, Kibo Peak. Arrive Machame Camp in time for your Dinner and Overnight. The meal plan is Breakfast, Picnic Lunch & Dinner.
DAY 2: MACHAME CAMP (3,000M) TO SHIRA CAMP (3,840M), DISTANCE: 5 KM ELEVATION (FT): 9,400FT TO 12,500FT AND HIKING TIME: 4-6 HOURS
After breakfast at Machame Camp, we leave the valleys of the rain forest and continue on an ascending path, although supposed to be the easiest day on the Machame Route, today’s trek involves some difficult uphill parts. There are numerous positions from which you can view the plains and forests under and Kibo and Mawenzi peaks above. Have your lunch in between Machame Camp and Shira Plateau, after lunch climbs the Shira Plateau, formed when Kibo’s lava streams filled the Shira Crater. Proceed to Shira Camp and relax for the rest of the day. The meal plan is Breakfast, Picnic Lunch & Dinner.
DAY 3: SHIRA CAMP (3,840M) TO LAVA TOWER TO BARRANCO CAMP (3,950M), DISTANCE: 10 KM ELEVATION (FT): 12,500FT TO 13,000FT AND HIKING TIME: 6-8 HOURS
After breakfast proceeds from the Shira Plateau, we proceed to the east up a ridge, crossing the linkage near the peak of Kibo. This is a hectic day as we will go up and down and ends with an elevation gain of only 100 meters, by early afternoon you will have climbed 670 meters to a height of 4,540 meters before starting your extraction to Barranco Camp. Proceed on into the barren landscape before stopping for lunch, quickly after lunch, approach the highest point of the day before dropping directly to Barranco Camp. We now proceed forward to the Barranco Camp at an elevation of 13,000ft. Here we relax for the rest day and enjoy dinner and overnight. The meal plan is Breakfast, Picnic Lunch & Dinner.
DAY 4: BARRANCO CAMP (3,950M) TO KARANGA VALLEY (4,200M) DISTANCE: 5KM ELEVATION (FT): 13,000FT TO 13,100FT AND HIKING TIME: 4-5 HOURS
After breakfast, leave Barranco Camp and proceed on a sheer elevation crossing the scramble up the Barranco Wall, to the Karanga Valley campsite. This is the tricky part of the day and in some places, you may have to use your hands to stretch your body up. Subsequent arriving the top, hike into moderately level terrain before making a short but abrupt descent into the green Karanga River Valley. This is also a very short day intended for acclimatization. The meal plan is Breakfast, Picnic Lunch & Dinner.
DAY 5: KARANGA VALLEY (4,200M) TO BARAFU CAMP (4,600M) DISTANCE: 5 KM ELEVATION (FT): 13,100FT TO 15,300FT AND HIKING TIME: 4-5 HOURS
After breakfast, we leave the Karanga Valley began the hike to Barafu Camp and connected the linkage which connects the decent route “Mweka” with the Machame trail. We proceed up to the Barafu Hut, at this point, you have made the South Circuit, that offers views of the summit from many different points. Here we set up the camp and rest, enjoy dinner, and prepare for the summit day. After finishing your meal, have a rest and try to sleep early as you will awake before midnight for your summit ascent. The meal plan is Breakfast, Picnic Lunch & Dinner.
DAY 6: BARAFU CAMP (4,600M) TO SUMMIT (5,895M) TO MWEKA HUT (3,100M). DISTANCE: 5 KM ASCENT AND 12 KM DESCENT, ELEVATION (FT): 15,300FT TO 19,345FT AND DOWN TO 10,000FT. HIKING TIME: 7-8 HOURS ASCENT AND 4-6 HOURS DESCENT.
Leave Barafu Camp early in the morning around 2 am to start your hike to the top of Kibo Crater. This is a very steep ascent at a high altitude, so I will say this is more intellectually and challenging portion of the trek. Although you can probably lose your appetite during this day and start to feel new consequences of altitude sickness, it’s highly recommended to take energizer snacks to keep your energy. Reach at Stella Point (18,600 ft) before or at sunrise, you will stop for a brief rest and will be rewarded with the most beautiful sunrise you are ever likely to see and weather permitting at Stella. Proceed on to Uhuru Peak, the hike here is slow and will take roughly 1 hour from Stella Point. Reach Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa point, spends a few minutes for pictures. After reaching the summit, we now make our descent continuing through down to the Mweka Hut camp site, stopping at Barafu for brunch. Arrive Mweka Hut Camp at approximately 6 pm and here you will enjoy your last dinner and accommodation on the mountain. The meal plan is Breakfast, Picnic Lunch & Dinner.
DAY 7: MWEKA CAMP (3,100M) TO MWEKA GATE (1,500M) TO MOSHI/ARUSHA OR JRO. DISTANCE: 10 KM, ELEVATION (FT): 10,000FT TO 5,400FT AND HIKING TIME: 3-4 HOURS
After breakfast, you will finish the trek with a descent to Mweka Gate. Your last trek on Kilimanjaro is a fantastic, crossing into Kilimanjaro’s cloud forest. At moderate elevations, it can be wet and muddy, gaiters and trekking poles will help. When you arrived at the Mweka Gate, you will receive your summit certificates. Reality Wild Adventures vehicles will be waiting at Mweka Gate to take you back to your hotel in Moshi/Arusha or may be JRO if you are going back home the same day. You will be able to buy some t-shirts, souvenirs, and sodas at the gate. Enjoy a picnic lunch at the gate or drive to the restaurant in Moshi for hot lunch. The meal plan is Breakfast & Picnic Lunch.
Note: The Kilimanjaro Trekking can be combined with Safari or Beach Holiday, and this will depend on your time frame.
