The Rongai Route is the less crowded route that the other most popular routes and is commencing and approaches the mountain from the north side close to the Kenyan border. The course offered as a seven day in a group climb or a six to seven-day private climbing and route descends the Marangu route. The main difference between the Rongai 6 day and seven-day itinerary is the additional acclimatization day at Mwenzi Tarn.
DAY 1: RONGAI START POINT (1996M) TO SIMBA CAMP (2626M), DISTANCE: APPROXIMATELY 6.7 KM AND HIKING TIME: APPROXIMATELY 4 HOURS
Depart from Moshi or Arusha town and drive to the Marangu park gate for registration only and then we proceed to Naro Moru, the northeast Kilimanjaro, an extra 68km and about 2 ½ to 3 hours on rough roads to the Rongai start point (1996m). Meet with your crew team including guides and porters before you start your trek from the Nale Moru village. The guides will organize all porters to make sure everyone has his luggage ready to start. The trekking begins, the path continues alongside mountain farmers’ areas and pine forests before it starts the separate mountain forest zone, where black and white colobus monkeys can frequently be viewed. After an approximate 3 to 4 hour walk, you will enter at the Simba Camp where you will spend the night. The meal plan is Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner.
DAY 2: SIMBA CAMP (2626M) TO KIKELEWA CAMP (3679M), DISTANCE: APPROXIMATELY 11.8 KM AND HIKING TIME: 6 TO 7 HOURS
After breakfast, we trek from Simba camp up towards Kibo till three 482m for lunch at First Caves, a length of 5.8km. The trekking today is passed within the heather and moorland zones and the scenes of Mawenzi and the vast Kenyan plains are extinct short of excellent. After lunch, we proceed to trek continuously up to Kikelewa Camp at about 3679 meters, where we are going to overnight. The meal plan is Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner.
DAY 3: KIKELEWA CAVE (3679M) TO MAWENZI TARN CAMP (4303M), DISTANCE: APPROXIMATELY 3.7 KM AND HIKING TIME: 3 TO 4 HOURS
The common species vegetation will end soon, and the landscape will become drier with the unusual rock structures. If the weather climate is clear, you may enjoy views of the Kibo and Mawenzi summits as well as Kenya’s savannah grasslands. Subsequent crossing a few extra rock structures, you will appear at the Mawenzi Hut. Rest and spend the afternoon acclimatizing and experience the camp area with some photos. The meal plan is Breakfast, Picnic Lunch & Dinner.
DAY 4: MAWENZI TARN CAMP (4303M) TO KIBO HUT (4730M), DISTANCE: APPROXIMATELY 9 KM AND HIKING TIME: 5 TO 6 HOURS
The day begins from Mawenzi Tarn camp, we pass the lunar desert of the saddle in within Mawenzi and KiboHut (4700m), at the base of the Kibo Crater wall by early afternoon, and this will approximately take 4 to 5 hours. Eventually, you will reach the School Hut, where you can rest and psychologically prepare yourself for tomorrow’s summit day.
Mawenzi Turn up to Kibo Hut (4,700m), 5-6 hours trekking. The meal plan is Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner.
DAY 5: KIBO HUT (4730M) TO UHURU PEAK (5895M) TO HOROMBO HUT (3705M), DISTANCE: APPROXIMATELY 5.4KM ASCENT AND 15 KM DESCENT AND HIKING TIME: 7 TO 8 HOURS TO REACH UHURU PEAK, 6 TO 8 HOURS TO DESCEND TO HOROMBO
You will wake up around 23h30, and the climb will begin after some tea and biscuits. This is where is going to be very hard, 4 to 6 -hour hike on frosted volcanic ash you will reach Gillman’s Point (5,681 m) on the crater’s rim. The sun lights will come up and warm you through your hike for extra 1 to 2 hours until you reach the summit and eventually stand on Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa and spend a few minutes for pictures. After a few minutes of pictures and appreciate your success we descend to Kiko Hut, it’s amazingly fast, and we rest at Kibo Hut for some refreshment, we continue to descend to reach Horrombo Hut. Later in the evening, you will enjoy your last dinner with drinks for sale at the camp and a well-earned sleep, filled with memories and overwhelming desire. The meal plan is Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner.
DAY 6: HOROMBO HUT (3705M) TO MARANGU GATE (1860M), DISTANCE: APPROXIMATELY 19.7 KM AND HIKING TIME: APPROXIMATELY 6 TO 7 HOURS
After breakfast, you will finish the trek with a descent to Marangu Gate. You proceed your descent 6 to 7 hours, crossing the Mandara hut, down to the Marangu gate. At moderate elevations, it can be wet and muddy, gaiters and trekking poles will help. When you arrived at the Marangu Gate, you will receive your summit certificates. Reality Wild Adventures vehicles will be waiting at Gate to take you back to your hotel in Moshi/Arusha or may be JRO if you are going back home the same day. You will be able to buy some t-shirts, souvenirs, and drinks at the gate. Enjoy a picnic lunch at the gate or drive to the restaurant in Moshi for hot lunch. The meal plan is Breakfast & Picnic Lunch.
NOTE: The Kilimanjaro Trekking can be combined with Safari or Beach Holiday, and this will depend on your time frame.
